1. Polypropylene is one of the most popular fibers for indoor-outdoor rugs. Thanks to its inherent nature, these durable yarn fibers repel water and help prevent molding and rot in damp, wet areas. 

Polypropylene's solution-dyed nature means its color absorbs all the way through the fiber, preventing fading and allowing for vibrant bold hues. Many times these rugs are power machine loomed and are typically more of a flat weave construction, but many also have hi-lo texture and dimension woven into them.

Using Polypropylene can also include rugs that have interesting textures, some with hand-hooked designs and patterns - not always just a simply flat solid color. Rugs made from Polypropylene also usually have great UV protection and are fade resistant.

Plus cleaning is effortless—simply rinse with a hose and allow to air dry—so you can enjoy carefree coastal living with lasting color, durability, and style.

More Machine Woven Styles

2. Polyester, however has a more luxurious touch and is fabulous for its soft feel on bare feet!

Using Polyester or a blend of polyester can also include rugs that have interesting textures, some with hand-hooked designs and hi-low patterns - not always just a simply flat solid color. Polyester rugs also have great UV protection, but take a little more care than Polypropylene rugs. 

Plus cleaning is a breeze, simply rinse with a hose and hang to allow to air dry—so you can enjoy carefree coastal living with lasting color, durability, and style.

3. Hand-Hooked Polyester Rugs  Hand-hooked area rug styles are created with a more plush with slight hi-lo woven designs. Not always ideal for spaces that are continually exposed to weather (rain!) these area rugs are better in warmer climates or covered patio areas. Or simply bring inside if there is a storm headed your way! 

Still washable, but takes a little more care to preserve the nature of these rugs - Vacuum regularly. DO NOT use beater brush. If long ends appear do not pull. This is not a defect. It is a normal occurrence in hand tufted rugs and is easily remedied using scissors to trim the sprouted section even with the rug. Sponge spots clean. To clean full rug, gently rinse with a solution of mild detergent and water. Hose rug clean, lift off ground and allow to dry thoroughly. Reducing exposure to rain and moisture will prolong rug life

Perfect for covered patios, indoor high-traffic areas, sunrooms and kid playrooms too!

But be careful! Hand-hooked or looped style rug construction is more prone to damage from pets claws.

4. One of our favorite materials for outdoor rugs is recycled PET yarn

This unique fiber is made from recycled water bottles - keeping them out of land fills, but especially out of our oceans and off the beaches! (LOVE!) Once the plastic bottles are melted down, these fibers are extruded and spun to mimic natural soft yarn like wool. Creating rugs with an amazing durable fiber that’s easy to clean, soft underfoot, and amenable to high traffic areas. 

PET yarn has become an important innovation in eco-friendly home décor, especially for rugs designed for both indoor and outdoor living. In rugs, recycled PET yarn offers the perfect blend of sustainability and performance. The fibers are naturally moisture-resistant, stain-resistant, and highly durable, making them ideal for high-traffic areas, patios, sunrooms, and beach homes. PET yarn rugs also hold color exceptionally well, resisting fading from sun exposure while maintaining their fresh, vibrant look season after season.

6.  Life Expectancy of your Rug? Expect indoor-outdoor rugs to last five to seven year; shorter in more humid climates or if left in areas where your rug will be constantly exposed to weather year-round. (California or Florida) Help expand their lifespan with the use of an outdoor rug pad and avoid placing rugs directly on wood or cement, which can trap in moisture.

"This is a beautiful throw! All the colors of the ocean that I was hoping to find, but in a subtle way. It looks great at the end of our bed! I'm really looking forward to a few items to come back "in stock" in order to make everything really come together. Just a note - the care instructions said to spot clean only. I have allergies and the first thing I always do with new linens is to launder them. A little about the artist from Costa Nova:

The story of the Summer Bliss collection begins during the family holidays that Laetitia Rouget enjoyed over the years. Can I tell you how excited I am about this new, yet classic trend for coastal cottage styling? The Fisherman Aesthetic! A little bit rustic, a little bit nautical and pure beach cottage fun.

Maybe it's because it's the coastal look that I personally am always gravitating towards in my own home: layers of cozy knit accents with hints of nautical (do NOT go overboard!), navy blue stripes, warm natural rattan furniture pieces, woven jute rugs, vintage sailing models, collected beach treasures and rope textures.

Don't forget a pop of warm red hue too!

Here are a few ideas to bring your look together:

Materials and Textures: Natural materials such as wood, stone, and soft woolen natural fibers are central to this layered look. Incorporating elements like wicker or rattan furnishings also adds depth and authenticity. Textural fabrics, including thick cable-knit throws and cozy wool tufted pillows enhance the tactile feel of this design idea too.

Lighting Ideas: Cool wall sconces that fit neatly into smaller cottage inspired spaces are our go-to recommendation! Better yet when the shades are woven of natural materials.

Patterns and Motifs: Use classic nautical cottage patterns like stripes in subdued navy, red and cream colors to maintain a sophisticated look. Thinking ticking stripes or even wider cabana striped designs! Can be in your pillows, but especially cool if you can find a durable area rug with a striped pattern  -

So, this is why we created our California Dreaming Collection. I miss the farming, fishing and surfing vibe of our small ocean town located so close to to big city life in San Francisco, but in a completely different world.  I miss the view of a wild sea, the beachcombing for shells and sea glass that was just a quick walk from my house...

Frost Peaches are a kind of peach that was developed at Washington State University that actually does really well in the Pacific Northwest.  Survives in rainy, cold weather and its disease resistant - perfect for our side of the mountains. Consequently, once every few years, their peach tree absolutely explodes with excess fruit - this year was one of those years.

So after 2 extra large peach cobblers (one with fresh blackberries!), 2 batches of peach jam, sliced on yogurt, sliced on ice cream - Tom and I thought we had better come up with an August themed cocktail as one more way to use up all of the super ripe fruit that are crowding my kitchen. 

Voila' The Peach Bourbon Smash! 

Here's what you need:

• 2 oz. Bourbon
• 1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
• 1/2 Fresh Lemon - Squeezed 
• 1 cup Peeled and Chopped Peaches
• 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
• Mint Leaves for Garnish
• Crushed Ice

Muddle the peaches, squeezed lemon juice, simple syrup and cinnamon in a shaker. Once they are all mixed well and the peaches are "smashed", add the bourbon to the shaker. Give it a shake and then pour your cocktail into prepared chilled rocks or double old fashioned glasses filled with crushed ice.  Garnish with fresh mint leaves. 

A "Smash" whisky cocktail was created in the nineteenth century as a boozy, refreshing drink to make with whatever fruit you have in season. A few summer ago, we used our wild blackberries to make a Blackberry Smash Cocktail - also super yummy!

Spring Jasmine Cocktail - Ingredients for one drink:

• 1.5 ounces Gin; a botanical style Gin is preferred over a London Dry
• .25 ounce Campari
• .25 ounce Grand Marnier 
• .75 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice
• Lemon Peel for Garnish
• Chilled Cocktail Glass

Mix it Up!

Pour all ingredients except for lemon peel into ice filled shaker and shake until blended. Strain into chilled pretty martini or coupe glass. Garnish cocktail with lemon peel twist.
